2018 UPDATE:

things to do:
  • go to marina barge for sunset to look over the marina bay and super trees (don't miss). stay until 7:45pm to watch the light show
  • do dancing with locals at zouk 
  • check out the really incredibly botanical gardens... one of the most beautiful in the world. check their website, sometimes they have shows and you can picnic! 
  • check out the cute cafes in tiong bahru (recommend plain vanilla cafe)
  • check out the area near duxton hill/tanjong pagar (use lululemon as a center point). great cafes and restaurants (recommend populus cafe)
  • have drinks on a rooftop in a teepee with great views at mr. stork
  • have drinks at atlas (don't miss this, super cool bar!) 
  • the artscience museum is really great! 
  • henderson waves bridge
  • haji lane/little india
  • lots of craft/stationary stores, i liked paper market
  • go to the public library 
things/places to eat: 
  • get amazing kaya toast at wywy kafeidian. honestly don't eat it anywhere else, it's so much better here. 
  • eat satay at telok ayer market (law pa sat). this is a don't miss (starts at 6pm daily) 
  • have a drink at oxwell & co on club street (good place to go out too). recommend the pina colada, it's very unique!
  • eat chicken rice, it's fucking amazing
  • chye sang huat hardware (cafe) and tiramisu hero
  • scissor cut curry (near little india) - great locals place
  • the coconut club - great malaysian food
  • really good chicken and noodles, here (one of my fav things i ate)
  • every.damn.hawker.center. 
  • dimsum at swee choon tim sum restaurant (good late night place)
ice cream: 
  • apiery ice cream (my #1)
  • matchaya (check their website, their hours suck)
  • birds of paradise
where to stay: 

 FROM 2015: 
i have fallen in love with singapore. it's SE asia, but in a livable fashion for someone who wants city life. i'm here for work this week and was so lucky to meet my old friend and travel buddy, jamie, for the weekend before heading into the new airbnb office.

the weather has been amazing and there's so much to see and do, a lot of it for free! here's my list and some pics:
  • gardens by the sea - really unique solar tree situation (my favorite attraction)
  • go paddle boarding and adventuring on sentosa island
  • marina bay sands - fancy mall, cool bridges, science museum, rooftop bar, great view of the city with the water
  • eat some amazing vietnamese fusion at dingdong
  • macritchie reservoir and tree top bridge (great hiking, my 2nd favorite activity)
  • nice views of marina bay sands, yummy drinks: overeasy

the architecture here is so cool, modern and interesting. things are orderly, clean and logical. it's definitely expensive and there are a shit ton of malls, but i just love it! i think i might move here!

medellin is a city of contrasts.  warm people, and insane traffic. metropolitan innovations, and simple pleasures i love it.  to stay (see below for info on guatape): what kind of traveler are you? how do you like to see a city: most places will tell you stay in poblado, but i really really don't recommend it. it's very touristy and can be unsafe because it's so touristy. that being said, a lot of the best restaurants and cafes are there, as well as some nice hotels. i suggest staying a bit away from calle 10, but don't walk at night. alternatively, here are some other close by neighborhoods: patio bonita, tesoro, castropol, campestre, la frontera.  if you want a quieter place near cafes, places to walk and great parks/the stadium: stay in laureles. it's very flat and easy to get around, but crime has gone up there because there's a lot of tourists. tons of bars, restaurants, cafes, and 70, which is a fun place for nightlife.  if you want to see how loca...

minimizing jetlag: shonna style

okay, so i don't get jetlag. it's my superpower, and it's pretty super. i don't mean to brag about it, but it's legit. and it makes traveling much easier. BUT i do think it's partially because i shift my sleep schedule and sleep on the plane, plus follow these MUST do tips below to ensure i can and will sleep when i need to and be awake when i need to. here's how i do it:  get a neck pillow. it really really makes a difference. if you don't like carrying a fluffy one around (i don't), get an inflatable one, that's what i use and it works just fine.  get ear plugs, and wear them. they make a HUGE difference on airplanes. i recommend these ones .  get an eye mask. they fuck with the lights and people might have their shades open, it's a crazy world out there and you need to be able to regulate the light. i recommend this one .  take tylenol PM 30 min before you need to sleep. if you've tried it before and it sucked, try it again...

kyoto: matcha magic and slower life

i took the bullet train to kyoto from tokyo to get outside the city and visit another part of japan. and i'm so glad i did! kyoto was beautiful, quieter, and i got to experience more like local japan life. i am traveling alone this trip. i haven't solo traveled for pleasure since i was transitioning between ventura and san francisco in 2013. back then i headed to the maldives, where i missed beau and was excited to start my life in sf. while solo travel can be challenging, it's nice not to have to make any decisions with anyone else and truly do what you want to do. no arguing over directions, deciding where to eat or feeling guilty about wanting to go to bed (story of my life). i spent my days wandering the streets, walking 10+ miles and trying lots of different foods. kyoto is FILLED with matcha everything. so many sweet treats and fun things to try. i definitely recommend matcha or black sesame ice cream and trying the foods from the food stalls and/or nish...
