a shonna in barcelona, day two
today was an absolutely magical day. the kind of day we needed. after paris.
we woke up pretty late which was really nice because neither of us have slept much in the last several days. we met up with another airbnb employee, yat, who i haven't spent much time with but we run in similar circles at work and i knew he'd be a good one.
we met up at sagrada de familia, which is a church designed by gaudi that has been in construction since 1883. it was so cool to see the progress since the last time i went in 2006. we had a lot of fun taking selfies and talking about what the state of it was when we were last there. selfie sticks are so necessary. this is one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen. the detail is so unique and so interesting. in some ways it reminds me of the grand mosque in abu dhabi, but better. the stained glass pours in colors to the main area, it's really breathtaking... a must-see.
from there we wandered to find some food and stumbled across barcelona's arc de triomf where we proceeded to have an incredibly serious and fun photo shoot. i know paris has the most famous arc but i wonder if barcelona copied it or what. probably should look it up, but instead we walked to get some lunch.
yat's host had recommended elsa y fred. we ordered a bottle of cava (spanish champagne) and a shit ton of tapas... holy goodness. salmon sashimi, more octopus, anchovies. it just was all so good. we had the best lunch, chatting, catching up on travel stories, getting to know yat better, etc. such a great lunch.
after lunch we headed down towards barceloneta... barcelona's little beach town. the sun was starting to set and the beach and sky were absolutely beautiful. this area brings back a lot of memories since i stayed in barceloneta the summer of 2006 with anna, lindsey and my bff jessie in a hostel. we walked by that area and while the hostel is different, it's still there. i remember the beach completely filled with topless people, women trying to offer massages "wanna massage?!" and it being the epitome of summer. while it's been amazing weather in bareclona (69/70), it wasn't quite bikini weather and the beach was scattered with people watching the sunset.
we took some pictures and walked along the beach heading to the W hotel, where we heard there were good views from the bar at the top. along the way we saw rollerbladers, a man carrying a bottom half of a naked mannequin and a lot of other random things. barcelona is a weird and magical place. along the way yat and i climbed this unusual jungle gym... it was actually pretty tall. #kidshit!
upon entering the swanky W hotel, we were greeted by a young woman who asked if we'd like a look around. she gave us a private tour of the hotel... all the beach cabanas, the spa, etc. it was pretty fucking amazing. natalie was bomb. then we had some really yummy cocktails on the 26th story of the hotel with views of the city and the ocean.
then we went to dinner with another coworker... more octupus, more jamon (thinly sliced cured ham... to die for!). so delicious! food has been good to us here in barcelona!!
today was epic. so fun to spend time with old friends and new. galavant around the city and discover new places, wander streets. see beautiful doors and be with friends, making new memories.
